In 1017 he started to work as a teller at the Vivaldi Bank, thanks to a recommendation of by his father. Over the years he worked himself up to be an accountant for richer clients, who handled with big amounts of money. Folwin found small extra fees and loopholes to enrichen himself with small sums here and there. Nobody ever found out about this until much later, as his clients didn’t bother to check the small numbers.

Folwin decided that it was time to be independent in 1188, and he quit from the bank and started a small company that did trading of all sorts of things. With the small fortune he had saved up and all the contacts from his banking career nothing stood between him and his success.
{{#spoiler: During his childhood he asked himself why the nobility had privileges that he didn’t. This thought stuck with him for many years, as he was very jealous of many noblemen he knew, until he came up with a plan on how to become a part of nobility himself.}}

In July 1209 he married Ayen Keahorn, the daughter of a bureaucrat, which Folwin saw as an opportunity to climb up the social ladder even higher. As the pair was invited to the yearly bureaucrats dinner it was the appropriate time for the Liafiel family to receive a family crest, which was designed in November 1209 by an old family friend, the painter [[Khiiral Fenynore]]. With his business running smoothly and the offspring settled, he started to plan the future of his children. His firstborn would start a career in politics and become head of the family once Folwin died, his second born would take over the family business and support the family financially.

Members of the Liafiel family

Ryfon Liafiel

Ryfon Liafiel was born in around the year 416 in Enmalin, nothing is known about his parents and his wife died at childbirth. He worked for the Vivaldi Bank where he had a good career. Born during the peak period he grew to be a loving and caring man, helping his friends whenever he could. He never approved his sons’ trickery or racism. He died of old age in 1167.

Folwin Liafiel

Folwin Liafiel was born in on 09. October 984 to Ryfon Liafiel, nothing is known about his mother. At a young age Folwin learned from his father about finances and how money works and as soon as he earned his first coin he already invested it.

In 1017 he started to work as a teller at the Vivaldi Bank, thanks to a recommendation of by his father. Over the years he worked himself up to be an accountant for richer clients, who made transactions with big amounts of money. Folwin found small extra fees and loopholes to enrichen himself with small sums here and there. Nobody ever found out about this until much later, as his clients didn’t bother to check the small numbers.

After the death of his father, who never knew how much Folwin gained by cheating the system, he knew that no one would question his wealth anymore. He quit from the bank in 1188 and started a small company for oversea trading. With the small fortune he had saved up and all the contacts from his banking career nothing stood between him and his success.

In July 1209 he married Ayen Keahorn, the daughter of a bureaucrat, which Folwin saw as an opportunity to climb up the social ladder even higher. As the pair was invited to the yearly bureaucrat’s dinner it was the appropriate time for the Liafiel family to receive a family crest, which was designed in November 1209 by an old family friend, the painter Khiiral Fenynore. With his business running smoothly and the offspring settled, he started to plan the future of his children. His firstborn would start a career in politics and become head of the family once Folwin died, his second born would take over the family business and support the family financially.

They soon moved into a bigger house and had two children, Luthais and Selphie. As Selphie didn’t fit into the role of the second son, the plan for her was to be married into a noble family to further strengthen their influence.

Over the time his business expanded as did his network of trading connections all around the globe. Nothing happened in the Democracy without him knowing about it. His name spread, and he was becoming known for his trustfulness and honesty, he was a great manipulator. Folwin was confident into his own abilities and that he had cleaned up all dirty laundry in his past, the career of his son could start, the next step for the family up the ladder.

Luthais Liafiel

Lord Luthais Liafiel was born on 11. April 1217. His father made sure that he could study politics at the Elvish Academy in Ullethhil, where he lived and studied politics from 1269 until he met the age requirement to be considered for the council in 1417. The next year he was voted into the city council with a small majority. Thanks to his father’s trading network it was possible for him to process information even before they were officially announced. During this time, he was standing in for better trading relations with the Darnach Islet, more military presence on the TODO (first island) and less taxation on food.

In 1392 he started campaigning for the provincial council. During the next four years he travelled all round the province to have as many public appearances as possible, many of them planned by his father well in advance. With those appearances he made himself known to the public and showed the best of his sides:

  • Participated at the opening of a new Vivaldi Bank in Filhdell as a guest of honour together with his father

He was elected in 1396 and joined the provincial council under the lead of Hagluin Wynmoira, where he promoted trading even further.

In 1433 Luthais married Clanire Faenorin, the daughter of a nobleman, making him the first in the family to wear the title of a Lord. Three years later their first son Alwin was born.

As soon as he was informed of the Garlars Day in 1435 he travelled to Adwick to see if anything can be saved and brought back Ruven to teach him how to be an elf. Despite the disapproval of his father, Ruven was accepted as a part of the family.

Alwin Liafiel

Alwin Liafiel was born on 30. January 1436. As grandson of Folwin and firstborn of Luthais his career was predestined from the beginning, he was to become a knight for the Democracy to engrave the name Liafiel even further into the books of history, and later carry on the family name with an appropriate title. He studied at the Military Academy and later became a captain of the militia, working towards the goal of becoming a member of the Protectors of the Seas on his 100th birthday. Due to his father’s influence he was able to be deployed for the Protectors of the Seas at the beginning of the war, trying to make a name for himself and be recognised by a knight of the order.

Vesryn Liafiel

Vesryn Liafiel was born on 09. Mai 1443. As the second son he could finally take the role Selphie was to have and take over the business. He studied the trades at the Elvish Academy. In 1491 after some successful ventures on his own he joined his grandfather on the board of the family company, learning all the secrets of the business from his grandfather.

Selphie Liafiel

Selphie Liafiel was born on 03. December 1228. She studied at the Elvish Academy and later started working as an herbalist around the island. On an excursion to Evorgos she met Cornos Zumven. Folwin forbid her to be with a human, and that should have been the end of it.

Selphie became pregnant and later gave birth to Ruven. As Selphie knew that she disrespected her father’s wishes, she also knew it was best to leave the Democracy. She and Ruven traveled to Adwick where she got killed on Garlars Day 49 years later.

Ruven is the son of Selphie, a trained forest ranger and excellent scout. Due to his mixed race he was never able to become anything in the military. Because of Alwin’s success and good health no one believes that the family heritage is in danger, Ruven would probably die before all of them anyways. Folwin never tried to marry Ruven to anyone, because he rather sees him die celibate than having three quarter elven offspring to take care of.

The Liafiel Trading Company

The Liafiel Trading Company is in possession of the Liafiel family, run by Folwin Liafiel. They have trading posts all over the province and on Darnach Islet.
