The elves are proud of their direct democracy, even though their realm is so large. The mages and wizards are the backbone of it, as they allow instant communication across the vast lands they rule.
All the other forms of rule are lower and must fail sooner or later as they do not give enough power to the lower classes. But still they believe that a long life is required for to be a good politician. This is represented in the age requirements for the participation in the politics. Only the one that lived for nearly two centuries are allowed to speak in the assembly. Voting requires a few more decades. For the lowest of the offices (e.g. captain of the guard) one still has to live for almost three and a half centuries. With the rising offices a longer live is one expected to have.
This results in little participation of other races, and also a high arrogance towards the younger ones. Humans for example are seen as just a work force or a means to an end.
Currently the populists control the people, they want to utilise the current instability to extend their colonies. The reason for that is that they are prosperous and their home is save. Still some argue against the war and want to mediate amongst the other races. They do have a difficult stand, as racism is spreading all over the world.
